Our newly refurbished 25 metre pool is the perfect place to take part in one of the best forms of exercise around.

  • Swimming lessons
    Lessons are available for children and adults. Our staff will work with you to develop skills, strength and endurance, helping you to reach your potential. All our classes follow the Leeds Learn to Swim programme produced by SwimLeeds and are run by ASA qualified coaches.
  • Early morning swim
    A great way to start the day for early birds.
  • Length swimming
    Length swimming is available for serious swimmers.
  • Adults only swimming
    Exclusive use for adults aged 16 and over.
  • Ladies only swimming
    Exclusive use for ladies aged 16 and over.
  • General swimming
    Sessions for general public use.
  • Pool fun sessions
    Incorporating a range of inflatables and water toys, this is an ideal session for children and families.
  • Swim fitness sessions
    Work out sessions to music with one of our fitness instructors.
  • Lifesaving
    Lifesaving lessons are available for 12-16 year olds. The course will help young people to develop responsibility, teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Parent and toddler swimming
    Structured sessions for parents with babies and toddler aged 3 months to 3 years.

Our new 
Bodyline gym has 60 stations of the most up-to-date life fitness equipment. With a range of cardio and resistance machines you can vary your routine for a well rounded work out each visit.

When you become a bodyline member you’ll receive a full induction from one of our qualified members of staff showing you exactly how the equipment works and answering your queries. If you’d like some extra support in devising a fitness programme why not book in with our experts who can help create the perfect fitness programme to best meet your needs and help you achieve your goals. If you want to track your progress why not book regular fitness programme sessions. Our staff can review how far you’ve come, set you new goals and provide you with that little bit of extra motivation.

The gym has a number of televisions showing a range of sport, music and programme channels. Throughout the year you’ll notice a number of events and competitions advertised in the gym that you can take part in either alone or as a group.

If you’d rather do something more interactive why not join one of the many fitness classes we run and exercise as part of a group? We have a range of classes to suit all tastes and abilities.

As many of our classes get full, we recommend that you book a place in advance. You can do this at reception when you are in the centre or by phone. Below is a quick run down of our most popular classes.

  • Dance classes
    Dance your way to a healthy lifestyle with our beginners ballroom and Latin American dance classes. The six-week course will teach you to dance the Waltz and Cha Cha. Give your dancing feet a break after the class and relax with a drink in the lounge.
    Tuesday: 7pm-8pm or 8pm-9pm

  • Yoga
    When you practice yoga regularly you become supple, flexible, strong and fit.
    Each yoga posture helps to stretch and strengthen your muscles and ligaments. Joints are put through their full range of movement and breathing techniques used to help with control and meditation. Over time you will notice increased flexibility, circulation, energy and concentration.
  • Aqua Aerobics
    Add a new dimension to your workout with this challenging but fun workout using the water as resistance. A safe and effective way to workout that is kind and gentle on the joints. The class is taken at chest depth and is suitable for non-swimmers and all levels of fitness.
  • Circuit training
    This multi stationed group exercise class is designed to work on strength, stamina and flexibility. Suitable for all abilities as you will be encouraged to work at your own pace and speed.
  • Aerobics
    A fantastic way to improve aerobic fitness, increase muscle tone and burn fat. The class will involve high and low impact combinations based around challenging and exciting choreography.
  • Boxercise
    Boxercise is one of the most effective forms of cross-training. Using simple boxing, kicking and movement techniques designed to improve speed, agility, strength and balance. A fun and effective workout performed to motivating music.

We have plenty of activities to keep our younger customers amused when they are not at school. A variety of activity sessions are available from swimming lessons to junior Bodyline gym sessions.

Holiday programmes will also be available to download at least two weeks before school holidays begin.

New athletics club at John Smeaton
John Smeaton leisure centre is set to be home to the Crossgate Cougers Athletics Club starting on Wednesday 9th April. Every Wednesday girls and boys aged between 8 and 12 can take part in the club run by experienced UK:athletics coaches. The sessions will take young people through a range of disciplines including running, jumping and throwing, skills that can be applied not only to athletics but a range of other sports.

Wednesdays - 4.30 to 5.30 pm term- time only

Price: £1.70, or £1.30 with a breezecard

Our indoor and outdoor courts are suitable for a range of different sporting activities. Both have dedicated changing rooms and lockers within the centre. Courts can be booked at reception up to seven days in advance for casual use, or as block bookings. Bookings are generally taken in 30 minute and 60 minute time slots, subject to availability.

Cancellations must be received 48 hours before your booking or you may be charged.

  • Indoor
    We have six indoor sport courts where we run a number of our programmes such as gymnastics, fitness classes and Striker 9 training sessions. Split into a two court hall and a four court hall, the facilities are perfect for sporting and recreation activities from badminton to cricket.
  • Outdoor
    Our outdoor courts consist of a multi-use games area (MUGA) and a full-size synthetic sports pitch. Both are flood-lit for extended use into the evening and can be used for a variety of sporting activities.

As the regional centre for Hockey, our MUGA pitch will see a lot of the action. In January we’ll have a hockey development officer based with us too. Details will be available soon for how you can get more involved.

John Smeaton leisure centre once boasted one of the largest 5-a-side leagues in the city, and Striker is set to make sure that there’s plenty of footballing action in the future. Our new Astroturf pitch is the perfect place to take part in a league, tournament or a casual match with friends.

Striker 5 - More than just a game 
Striker 5 is the ultimate 5-a-side football experience. As part of a league we’ll take care of all the arrangements, fixtures, referees, equipment, so that all you have to do is turn up.

You can also use our flexible booking system to make casual arrangements up to seven days in advance or make a block booking. Pitches are open until 9pm and are flood-lit to continue use on dark nights. All you need to do is call reception to make the arrangements. Striker 9 - It’s a skill thing
The  Striker 9 awards scheme is a football skills programme for children and young people aged 5-16. The programme helps young people to:

- Develop football skills.
- Learn about rules, fitness, conduct and nutrition.
- Become healthier and more active.

There are nine levels from one to six then bronze, silver and gold. Skills learnt throughout the programme include, passing, striking, control and turning. Young people can track their progress in their personal Striker file collecting their medals and certificates.

Ask at reception for further details or pick up a children’s activity leaflet for session times.

Bodyline membership
We have a range of Bodyline membership cards to suit everyones needs.  Memberships range from Bodyline swim and fitness to the Bodyline Premier which includes the use of all gyms, fitness classes, swimming and squash.  There are also special deals including off peak, junior and family cards.  For details on the range of Bodyline membership packages, including our Corporate bodyline scheme which could save you up to an extra 20%, please click on the Bodyline link below.

Book a facility online
If you have a Leedscard, Breezecard, Bodyline card, induction card or corporate sport pass you can now book leisure centre facilities online. Bookable facilities include squash, badminton, 5-a-side and table tennis. John Smeaton Leisure Centre is a great place to hold functions. With a dedicated bar and function room available for hire, it is the ideal place to hold everything from wedding receptions to business meetings. Our bar overlooks the floodlit pitches creating the ideal environment for sports presentations and award ceremonies.

  • Bar
    If you just want a few drinks after a workout or with your friends on an evening why not try out our bar area. With big screen TVs to show major sporting events it’s the perfect place to wind down. Drinks promotions will run throughout the year, so keep you eyes peeled for the one that takes your fancy.

  • Cyber parties for children
    Our children’s parties are a great way to take the hassle out of planning a birthday party. Choose from a wide range of party themes including gladiators, swimming, football and soft play to name a few.

    Your party booking includes:

    - Your own Cybernaut to supervise the party.
    - Use of a room for party food.
