Website: Temple Newsam House

One of the great country houses of England set within grand and beautiful parkland with one of the largest working rare breeds farms in Europe, Temple Newsam has much to offer visitors.

Famous as the birth place of Lord Darnley, notorious husband of Mary Queen of Scots, Temple Newsam House is a truly impressive Tudor-Jacobean mansion.  Described as one of the best in Britain and beautifully restored to its former glory, it is now home to one of the most important collections of decorative arts in Britain.

Home Farm
Home Farm, which is centred on the 400 year old Great Barn, is the largest rare breed centre in Europe where visitors can see at close range over 400 rare sheep, pigs, goats, cattle and poultry which would have been common sights on British farms only 100 years ago. Traditional farm buildings house collections of old agricultural tools and equipment and re-created 19th century workshops.

The farm is closed to the public on Mondays. Closing one day a week provides staff with the opportunity get out the brooms and start the never-ending task of mucking out. It’s also a chance to get on with cleaning jobs that cannot be done when members of the public are in the farmyard. Maintaining a clean and hygienic farmyard is essential for the health of the animals. For more information call (0113) 264 5535.

Access
The gardens and woodland are fully accessible. Home Farm is uneven and cobbled but has some trails with cobbles filled in and most displays are accessible to wheelchair users. Electric scooters and wheelchairs can be pre-booked for use in the grounds. Disabled parking is available. There is a lift and disabled toilet in the house. Telephone 0113 264 5535 to book or ask on arrival in the visitor centre in the stable courtyard.

Temple Newsam public golf course
There are two testing 18 hole courses for pay and play golf set in the grounds. Call (0113) 264 7362 for more information.
