The Construction Skills Learning Centre has delivered training in construction related trades for nineteen years. Working in partnership with Leeds College of Building and other specialist sub-contractors it is actively involved in the regeneration of the city and aims to develop the skills of local people to meet some of the skills shortages in the construction industry.

The off-the-job training is delivered at our centre, which provides purpose built facilities for trade specific training for the construction industry. Learners have the opportunity to gain valuable on-site work experience with local employers, putting their skills into practice and supporting them in achieving qualifications.

The Construction Skills Learning Centre provides quality training programmes (see below) delivered by our professional construction team in the following skill areas:

  • Carpentry and Joinery (Wood Occupations)
  • Brickwork (Trowel Occupations)
  • Plastering
  • Painting and Decorating

Our training includes:

  • An appropriate CSCS card and work towards a nationally recognised qualification in their chosen trade        
  • Manual Handling, First Aid and Health & Safety certification as appropriate
  • A full induction into the construction industry
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Service Skills, Skills for Life and Key Skills certification
  • Jobsearch and employability support

Young People's Programmes on offer at the Construction Skills Learning Centre:

BTEC Construction - a nationally recognised work-related qualification offering Year 10 and 11 pupils in High School the opportunity to gain knowledge, experience an introduction to the construction industry and develop some practical skills. We offer Introductory Diploma in Construction (Level 1) and First Diploma in Construction (Level 2), both qualifications count towards pupils GCSE portfolio.

Our 14 - 16 programme offer the opportunity for progression to a range of 16+  programmes offering training, work placements and help to gain employment.

Apprenticeships
- for young people aged 16 – 18 who want to train as a Construction Apprentice. We provide quality apprenticeship training and a college place funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

An Apprenticeship programme lasts around 12 - 16 months and includes an NVQ at Level 2, a technical certificate and key skills. Apprentices are helped to find work experience placements and/or employment, often within Leeds City Council.

Work with Employers

The Construction Skills Learning Centre work with local employers to meet their specific staffing needs and have recently been involved in the following customised job guarantee programmes.

  • Estate Worker training with Leeds Federation Housing
  • Community Caretaker training with Leeds City Council’s City Services
  • Window and Door Fitting in conjunction with companies including, Baldwins, Alternative Windows and Hays Construction Agency
  • Scaffolding training with local employers
  • Heating and Ventilation with companies such as SIAS, Morfitts and Sayers International

We also work closely in partnership with the Federation of Master Builders, Frank Haslam Milan, Miller Homes and many other major employers.

We actively encourage women to enter into the construction industry where they are currently under-represented.
