Lifesaving

Lifesaving provision at Leeds City Council leisure centres 

Lifesaving incorporates elements of water safety education, life support, first aid, aquatic lifesaving and life guarding. It is also a growing sport that will soon be seen in the Olympic Games.

Where can I take part in lifesaving 

  • Junior lifesaving is available at the following leisure centres: Aireborough, Armley, Bramley, Chippindale, East Leeds, Fearnville, John Smeaton, Kirkstall, Scott Hall, Rothwell, Morley and Wetherby.
  • Senior lifesaving is available at the following leisure centres: Aquatics centre at John Charles Centre for Sport, John Smeaton, Kirkstall, Scott Hall and Morley.
  • Sport lifesaving is available at the following leisure centres: Aquatics centre at John Charles Centre for Sport, Scott Hall and Morley.

Leeds lifesaving awards 

  • Juniors - Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Rookie Lifeguard – following stages 8-10 from the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming. The awards cover self rescue and lifesaving skills.  Prerequisites: Leeds Dolphin Award 8 or ASA stage 7.
  • Seniors - RLSS Bronze Medallion – designed to establish competent levels of knowledge on water safety combined with practical experience of  performing rescues in simulated open water conditions. Prerequisites: Age 12+ , approx 400m.
  • Award of Merit – an extension of the Bronze Medallion including Life Support. Prerequisites: Age 15+,  Bronze Medallion.
  • Distinction – the top level award of the RLSS. Participants develop excellent levels of knowledge and practical ability in a variety of rescue skills including Life Support 3. Prerequisites: Age 16+, RLSS Award of Merit RLSS Open Water Silver Cross.

Sport lifesaving is the competitive element of the sport that sees lifesavers compete skills, speed and teamwork. Competitions take place at local, regional, national and international levels and lifesavers of all ages can get involved.

Lifesaving/lifeguarding and first aid courses – a range of short course accredited programmes are available.
