River Aire, Leeds Waterfront
River Aire, Leeds Waterfront

Leeds is blessed with two fine rivers flowing from the west to the east through the district. Both originate in the Yorkshire Dales and both bring a touch of the feeling of the Dales to the city and provide recreational opportunities for citizens and visitors alike.

The northern part of Leeds forms part of Lower Wharfedale and that gem of a river; the Wharfe enters the district at the attractive rural market town of Otley where there is a fine bridge and park overlooking a small weir. It passes through Pool in Wharfedale before flowing under the graceful arches of Arthington Viaduct under the gaze of Almscliff Crag, past Harewood with its wonderful house and gardens and onto the bustling market town of Wetherby with its fine limestone bridge and many tourist facilities. Both Otley and Wetherby have tourist information centres. The Wharfe forms the boundary between Leeds and Harrogate for much of its course through the district

The River Aire enters Leeds northwest of Kirkstall Abbey and passes through the heart of the city. It forms a green corridor that provides a haven for wildlife and brings many walkers and cyclists to the attractions of greatly regenerated waterfront area of the city centre. Here will be found many attractions including the Royal Armouries and Granary Wharf. Much has been done in recent years by the " Eye on the Aire" group to improve the river quality and many species of fish once thought lost have now reappeared. The river flows alongside the Leeds and Liverpool canal for much of its course through Leeds. Together they offer a great opportunity for exploring a city that has much to offer the visitor.
