This year's competition is now closed - r
esults will be announced on 23 May
The Leeds in Bloom design a flowerbed competition is promoted by our parks and countryside service in association with Leeds Floral Initiative and Evans Property Group Leeds. The competition aims to encourage young people to be more aware of their environment and the horticultural features within it.
What does it involve?
Children are invited to create a design for one of three flowerbeds in Leeds city centre: one in York Street and the other two in Park Square. Winning designs for each of the beds will be translated into planting schemes and so you will be able to see your designs bloom over the summer months.
- Anyone can enter this popular competition between the ages of four to 14.
- Because the winning design will be planted out using real flowers we have to specify which colours you can use. All designs should only use the following colours: red, pink, purple, orange, gold, silver, shades of blue, white, yellow, salmon, peach and cream
- Entries should be imaginative and original. The idea is to design a pattern or collage rather than a garden scene or picture. Remember the designs have to be translated into a planting scheme.
- Individual entries only: no shared or group designs allowed.
- Each design must be no larger than A3 and should be clearly labelled with the title of your design, your full name, age and your school's name, address and telephone number.
- The judges' decision is final. No correspondence concerning the competition will be entered into.
- All entries will be returned to their owners after the competition. The Floral Initiative reserves the right to display or reproduce any of the designs without seeking the individual’s permission.
The closing date is Monday 9th January 2012. Send your entries to Richard Gill, Floral Initiative Officer, City Development, Parks and Countryside Service, Redhall Lane, Shadwell, Leeds, LS17 8NB.
Prizes
Each of the three winners will have their design translated into prominent flowerbeds within the city centre, and there will be a plaque telling people who designed the display. Winners will have their photographs taken by a professional photographer in front of their flowerbed, and a press release will be sent with the photos to the regional newspapers.
Winners and runners-up will get individual prizes and certificates from the parks and countryside service:
- The three winning schools each get garden centre gift vouchers to the value of £300.
- Runners-up schools get vouchers to the value of £150.
Vouchers are supplied by Evans Property Group. The Lord Mayor will present the awards at a presentation to which the children, their parents and teachers will be invited. All entrants receive a named certificate.
