How can I find out about my house, my street, my local area, or the history of Leeds?

  • Your house deeds,
  • Your local history or amenity group - Leeds Civic Trust have their details
  • Central Reference Library for old maps, photographs, local history books and booklets and street directories,
  • West Yorkshire Archives for original plans and documents (telephone them first).
  • A special interest organisation such as the Garden History Society

How can I find someone to advise on alterations or extensions to my historic property?

  • Engage an architect or surveyor experienced in historic building work by contacting the Royal Institute of British architects or the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors

Where can I find historic places to visit in the Leeds area?

  • Leeds Visitor Centre, the main tourist information centre for this area
  • English Heritage and the National Trust - although they have no properties within the Leeds district both organisations have places to visit close by
  • Before each September look at the Heritage Open Days (HOD) listings on the Leeds Civic Trust website for special openings and events during the HODs weekend.
  • Leeds Civic Trust, Victorian Society, Yorkshire Gardens Trust etc for guided walks, talks and other events.

How can I get involved?
Joining a local, national or regional group will put you in touch with like-minded people who already have access to much information and expertise. But you don't have to know anything or even do anything - merely joining these organisations will help their cause and promote the conservation of Leeds.

You can find out more about these organisations and sources from the links on this page.
