If you are a council tenant and have been living in a council property for at least five years then you may be able to buy your home. You may also qualify for a discount. The amount of discount you will get depends on how long you have been a tenant. The maximum discount is £75,000 .
If you were a council or housing association tenant in the past but have had a break you may still qualify for a discount. You will still need to have been a tenant for at least five years.

You may not be able to buy some types of property. These include
- specialist housing for the elderly, such as sheltered housing, ground floor flats and bungalows
- specialist housing for the disabled
- properties that you have in connection with your job
