Some examples of homes provided by Housing Associations

Housing Associations provide rented housing for people who cannot afford to buy their own home, or need special types of housing. They are often called Registered Social Landlords (RSLs). They do not make a profit, and many of them are charitable organisations.

They vary in size, some have more than 20,000 homes all over the country, and others may have just a few houses in one city or area.

What does a Housing Association do?
Different housing associations offer different types of service, for example they may:

  • Provide affordable homes for people to rent
  • Provide low cost homes for sale. These are sometimes part of a  shared ownership scheme - (part rent/part sale)
  • Provide housing for vulnerable groups, or people needing specialist support
  • Work in partnership with black and ethnic minority communities to provide homes
  • Work in partnership with local councils to improve estates and town centres
  • Take over the ownership and management of council housing to help improvement schemes and regeneration projects,
  • Be partners in housing programmes.

How are housing associations run?
Housing associations have paid staff that run the organisation. These may include financial managers, caretakers, housing management staff, wardens, and building and maintenance staff.

Housing Associations have a management committee who make decisions regarding policy or strategy. They are unpaid and cannot benefit from the association’s work or activities. A member of a management committee can be anyone who has an interest in housing. Some associations have board members who are tenants.

If you are interested in becoming a tenant member of your management committee, you will need to contact your Housing Association.
