Leeds City Council has the unique position of not only being able manage our environmental impacts through our activities, and also influence the impacts around Leeds through the services we provide. In the following sections we provide an overview of our direct impacts upon the environment through our activities and those we have the opportunity to influence through our services.
In the following pages of our Environmental Statement, we have presented each section to cover the individual targets as set out within the Environmental Policy.
Leeds City Council services
The Council influences the environmental performance of business in the city by supporting environmental management projects that reduce environmental impacts and associated operating costs.
Key Performance Indicator EM51:
We said that we would work with our partners to investigate how we could measure our success in this area. We have not completed this work in 2005/6, however following the success in 2004/5, we once again provided 'surgery' sessions for our own contractors at an open day in 2005. Environmental advice is available to businesses in the council’s Procurement Strategy (2005-2008), which includes a section on Socially Responsible Procurement.
Leeds City Council activities
The City Council operates an environmental management system - you can read about the way this system works by selecting the link on this page.
As part of our environmental management system, all Council staff should be aware of the need to reduce their impact on the environment through our internal awareness schemes. Some staff have specific environmental responsibilities and need to follow procedures and comply with relevant environmental laws.
Key Performance Indicator EM35: number of staff who have responded to our internal survey who satisfy awareness criteria.
