Leeds City Council services
The City Council has a statutory responsibility to collect household waste and is able to influence how much of this waste is diverted from landfill sites by providing convenient, easy to use and accessible recycling facilities.
The Council also works with its partners to help Leeds businesses reduce their own wastes.

Leeds City Council activities
Leeds City Council produces hazardous and general waste from offices, depots and public buildings. Hazardous waste, for example: light bulbs; used oils and chemicals must be managed and disposed of properly to prevent pollution. We are working with our contractors and suppliers to ensure correct disposal routes are implemented, reduce packaging waste and are reducing the amount of general waste by introducing recycling facilities.

**This amount relates to recycling rate of buildings provided with recycling facilities (approximately 100 buildings). We procured a new waste and recycling contract in July 2004. Recycling facilities only began ‘rolling-out’ 10 months later, with the first phase in April 2005, and a second phase in December 2005.
