EMAS - Glossary of terms (2006)

Biocide

A chemical substance, such as pesticide, fungicide, herbicide, insecticide, miticide, or rodenticide, etc., capable of killing different forms of living organisms used in  environmental health services, horticulture, landscape management, & forestry

Biodiesel

Road fuel made from non-oil sources of oil such as palm oil, used cooking oil or oil seed rape. Leeds City Council uses a 5% blend of biodiesel in its vehicle fleet

Biodiversity

Refers to the immense variety of the world's genes, species and ecosystems

PM10

A major air pollutant consisting of tiny solid or liquid particles of soot, dust, smoke, fumes, and aerosols. The size of the particles (10 microns or smaller, about 0.0004 inches or less) allows them to easily enter the air sacs in the lungs where they may be deposited, resulting in adverse health effects. PM10 also causes visibility reduction and is a criteria air pollutant

SAP

Standard Assessment Procedure - Energy efficiency is measured on a scale from 1-120 under the 'SAP' scheme. The higher numbers indicate more energy efficient homes that should be cheaper to run and easier to keep warm
