Business Continuity Management

What is business continuity management (BCM)?

Business continuity management (BCM) is a process which produces plans to cover any incident which would disrupt the critical services the business provides.  These contingency plans strengthen the company or organisation and allow (as far as possible) services to continue if there is an incident.

Do all organisations need to conduct business continuity management / planning?

Some organisations have to have business continuity planning by law.  For example, the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 means that we have to have plans and be ready to carry on providing services as far as possible in an emergency.

For others companies it is a good idea as it means that if there is an incident they can keep providing the services or goods to the customer and, by keeping the business running, save costs.

Does Leeds City Council conduct business continuity management / planning?

Yes. We have a Risk Management Unit which works with staff so that if there is an incident we can keep all important services running.

We also have a Peace and Emergency Planning Unit which works with other local authorities and the police and fire service so that if there is a major incident or emergency we can all work together to support people in Leeds.
