Gas appliances - service and safety information

Gas appliances
All our gas appliances such as gas boilers or gas fires have a set of instructions. If you do not have these instructions we can send you some.

You will need to tell us

  • Your name
  • Your address including postcode.
  • Your telephone number.
  • Your e-mail address
  • The type of appliance - eg gas fire or water heater
  • The make of the appliance
  • The model name and/or the appliance number.

If the information is no longer in print we will let you know and may arrange some one to call and tell you how to use your appliance.

Gas safety information

  • Never use a gas appliance if you think its not working properly. Signs to look for are yellow or orange flames, soot or stains around the appliance and pilot lights that frequently blow out.
  • Never cover an appliance or block the vents.
  • Never block or obstruct any fixed ventilation, grilles or airbricks.
  • Never block or cover outside flues
  • Never fit draught-proofing to the doors of a room containing a gas appliance.

Gas leaks emergency action
If you smell gas, you should telephone Transco immediately on FREEPHONE 0800-111-999. They will deal with reports of gas escapes free of charge at any time, day or night.

Gas servicing
To keep your gas appliances working safely, we arrange for one of our contractors to service them every year. All our gas service contractors use Corgi registered gas engineers. Once they have completed the service, they will provide you with a landlord’s safety certificate- known as a CP12. You will need to sign the CP12 document and the contractor will leave you a copy which you need to keep safe.

We will send you a letter letting you know that they need to visit your home to carry out the annual service. If you want to make appointment you can ring and arrange this with the contractor. You will find the telephone number on the letter you receive.

If after three visits we still cannot get in to service your gas appliances we will let your ALMO know and they may start legal proceedings. This could mean that you will have to pay any court costs.

Your own appliances
If you own your own gas appliances a contractor, of your own choosing, will still need to service them. This is something that you have to pay for.

We still need to have a copy of the service report (CP12), which your contractor will give you. We need this information to keep our records up to date.
