Housing associations are non-profit making organisations that provide homes for people who cannot afford to buy their own home or need special types of housing. They are also called Registered Social Landlords (RSLS).

They vary in size, some with over 20,000 homes all over the country, others with just a few houses in one city.

What does a Housing Association do?

Housing associations support different types of local projects. For example they may:

  • provide and manage affordable homes which people can rent
  • provide low cost homes for sale. These are sometimes through a shared ownership arrangement - (part rent/part sale)
  • provide housing for vulnerable groups, or people who need specialist support
  • work in partnership with black and ethnic minority communities to provide homes
  • work in partnership with local councils to improve estates and town centres
  • take over the ownership and management of council housing to support improvement schemes and regeneration initiatives
  • add to housing programmes by supporting or introducing local schemes which support communities.

How are housing associations run?

Most housing associations have paid staff that carry out the day to day running of the organisation. These might include financial managers, caretakers, housing management staff, wardens, and building and maintenance staff.

A committee of unpaid members manages a housing association. They are not allowed to benefit from the association’s work or activities. The management committee can be anyone who has an interest in housing. Some associations have board members who are tenants.

If you want to become a tenant member of a management committee you may have to be elected by the other tenants of the association.

Leeds Homes

A number of Housing Associations are members of the Leeds Homes Scheme. Our scheme gives you up to date information on properties that are available for rent across Leeds. This may help you with more choice in deciding where to live. You can find a link to the Leeds Homes website on this page
