If you have been a council tenant, and have had a secure tenancy for at least two years you have the right to buy your home from the Council.
As a council tenant you will be able to buy your home at a discounted price. The amount of discount you will get depends on the number of years you have been a tenant. The maximum discount is £24,000.
If you live in a house or bungalow then you will buy the freehold of your property and will own it outright. If your home is a flat or maisonette then you will buy it on a leasehold basis and the lease will normally be for a period of 125 years.
You can find out more information on the Right to Buy scheme from the Directgov website by following the link from this page.
You may not be able to buy some types of property. These include
- specialist housing for the elderly, such as sheltered housing, ground floor flats and bungalows
- specialist housing for the disabled
- properties that you have in connection with your job
We will tell you whether or not you can apply to buy your council home at the start of your tenancy.
If we tell you that your home is not available to buy because it is suitable for an elderly or disabled person, you can appeal against this decision. You will need to contact the Department of Communities and Local Government. You cannot appeal if your home is not available to buy for any other reason.
You can contact us by phone on 0113 247 6041 or 0113 247 6042, Monday to Friday 08.00 - 17.00.
