When you become one of our tenants, you will have an introductory tenancy for a year and then it will become a secure tenancy. An introductory tenancy does not have all of the rights of a secure tenancy, and we have explained this in the documents you can download from this page.
We have written this section to explain some of the key points in your tenancy agreement. You should make sure you understand it before you sign.
If you have any questions about the tenancy agreement, this booklet may be useful. If you are still unsure of your rights and responsibilities, please speak to our staff at your local housing office, or One stop centre, who will be happy to help.
Your tenancy
There are two types of tenancy you can have with us, ‘secure’ or ‘introductory’. You will have an introductory tenancy, unless you are transferring from another secure or assured tenancy with Leeds City Council, another local authority or a housing association.
Introductory tenancy
This is a kind of ‘trial period’ that lasts for 12 months, and as long as there are no problems in that time, you will automatically become a secure tenant. We have included full details which you can find in the booklet ‘Welcome to your introductory tenancy’, that you received with your tenancy agreement.
Secure tenancy
If you have a secure tenancy, it means that, if you do not break any part of the tenancy agreement, you can live in your home for as long as you want to.
If you break the agreement, we have the right to evict you. If we decide that we want to do this, there will be a court hearing where you will be able to put your case to a judge.
