Keeping pets in council housing

RSPCA logo

Our tenants are usually allowed to keep pets in their homes as long as the home is suitable for their needs and they are well cared for. You should ask for permission at your local housing office and let them know how many and what breed they are. Permission will not be refused unless there is a good reason and we will explain that reason to you.

Guide dogs and other support dogs will always be allowed.

The policy on the right gives guidance on keeping pets our housing. It also gives advice on responsible pet ownership and what to do if there are problems with other people's pets.

In 2009 the policy was given a national award by the RSPCA. The 'Housing Bronze Footprint' recognises that the policy gives good advice and sets sensible guidelines on keeping pets in your council home.
