Garden hedges

A hedge can make an ideal garden boundary but can also cause problems. So whether you have a hedge on your property or are affected by one, you can now find out what makes a good hedge or what you can do to alleviate any difficulties you may be having with a hedge.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) has produced a leaflet Over The Garden Hedge, which you can download from this page. It gives an easy-to-follow guide to dealing with many of the common problems caused by garden hedges, as well as a list of useful contacts.

If you are thinking about planting a hedge, you can also download The Right Hedge for You, a leaflet also produced by the ODPM which will help you choose the right hedge for your garden.

Both these leaflets provide general guidance and answer many of the most common questions asked about hedges and hedgerows. You can also find out more about looking after hedges and hedgerows at the Arboricultural Association or Royal Horticultural Society websites.

The Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 included provision for a new procedure for dealing with complaints about high hedges in England and Wales. This came into force on 1 June 2005. Further information is available on the page High Nuisance Hedges, and on the ODPM website, links to all of which are available from this page.
