Home adaptations – frequently asked questions

How can I get home adaptations?

To get adaptations to your home, you’ll need to call us on 0113 222 4401 to arrange a community care assessment. In the assessment, we will discuss the difficulties you are having and work together to assess your needs. Read more about having an assessment.

If you need home adaptations in order to be able to leave hospital, there is a fast-track system. NHS occupational therapists who work in hospitals or primary health care can also make recommendations for adaptations.

How much will I need to pay?

Minor adaptations – generally this means work costing less than £1,000 – are free, if they are essential for your safety. For larger adaptations, we will make a recommendation for work which is ‘necessary and appropriate’, depending on the tenure of your house.

  • If you rent your house through the council (via East North East Homes, Aire Valley Homes or West North West Homes), the recommendation is made through the relevant housing organisation (known as ALMOs, or arm’s length management organisations).
  • If you live in housing association property the recommendation will be made to the landlord.
  • If you are an owner occupier or live in private rented property, the recommendation will be made to our Environment and Neighbourhoods Directorate for a Disabled Facilities Grant. Read more about Disabled Facilities Grants.

Are there any types of home adaptations Leeds Social Care will not be able to provide?

  • We can only help with adaptations that are needed for you to live safely and independently in your home. This will be discussed in your community care assessment (see above).
  • We can’t provide storage or access for powered wheelchairs and scooters, or for pathways and access across communal areas which other people also need to use. If you are a council tenant, your ALMO may be able to assist you with this.

Where can I get further information?
