Emergency alarm call service – frequently asked questions

What special equipment do I need to use the alarm call service?

To connect the alarm equipment you will need to have:

  • a BT/cable telephone line available in your home, and

  • an electrical socket less than six feet from your telephone

The alarm equipment has a large button and loudspeaker. When you press the button an emergency call is made to our response centre where trained staff will help you.

You can activate your alarm from anywhere in your home. You do this by pressing a button on the small, portable pendant that you can keep with you all the time. It even works in your garden.

How do I get the emergency alarm?

To get the Care Ring emergency alarm, call us on 0113 224 3485. Or download the application form from the top right hand side of this page.

How does the system work?

In our records we have information that we will ask you to give us when you contact us. We use this information to help you if there is an emergency.

If you need help:

  • press the button and the call will go through to our response centre. One of our trained staff will speak to you through the alarm

  • we can arrange for somebody to visit you, if appropriate. This could be a member of your family, a neighbour or, if you live in sheltered housing, your warden

  • even if you can’t speak (for example because of a stroke), the operators at the response centre will be able to tell who has called and will send somebody to visit straight away

  • we can contact the ambulance service directly if there is an emergency

Why do you need details of my relatives, neighbours or carers?

If you want us to connect you to the service, we need to have details of people that we can contact on your behalf, if there is an emergency. That is so that we can ask for help should you need it. Usually, close family members, friends or neighbours act as contacts for our customers and hold keys in case they are taken ill or need help in an emergency.

If you cannot provide this information we cannot connect you to the service.

What happens if the equipment goes wrong?

If any equipment we have provided becomes faulty, repairs will be carried out free of charge. We will never leave you without an alarm unit.

How much does the service cost?

The Care Ring emergency alarm call service is free of charge.

What happens if I change my mind?

If you change your mind about using the alarm call service, you can end your agreement by giving one month's notice. If you are moving to a new home, you must let us know a month before you move.

If the equipment belongs to us you will need to return it. We will make arrangements with you to collect it.
