Heart Watch is a scheme delivered by Leeds City Council’s Sport and Active Recreation Service with the support of NHS Leeds. The scheme is divided into four phases with phases three and four taking place at local leisure centres.
Is it for me?
The programme is specifically designed for people with cardiac related problems such as recovering from a heart attack, cardiac surgery or sufferers of angina. It is also suitable for people who have diabetes or the older person who wants to start an exercise regime. Family, friends or spouses are actively encouraged to also take part in the exercise classes.
What does it involve?
The classes are made up of a variety of exercises with the intensity tailored to suit each individuals needs. Each class has a British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation (BACR) qualified instructor who can deal with various medical problems and advise on the best exercise programme for each individual.
How do I get involved?
To gain access to the programme you need to provide medical information about your condition. This can be obtained via the GP or practise nurse. Please contact us to get a referral form.
If you have finished phase three cardiac rehabilitation your cardiac nurse, physiotherapist or exercise specialist can make a referral to Heart Watch. Phase three cardiac rehabilitation is run at the following venues in Leeds:
Heart Watch offers optional medical testing with a local GP. This test includes an ECG treadmill test, blood tests, anthropometric tests, blood pressure etc. The test is similar to the BUPA health check at a fraction of the price.
