Being a young carer

being a young carer

Caring tasks involved
Caring work is not only physically but also emotionally demanding to young carers and can involve tasks including the following.

  • Housework, including shopping and cooking
  • Collecting benefits and paying bills
  • Helping with medication
  • Reading and explaining letters
  • Remind them of and going to appointments
  • Help with getting in and out of bed, washed and dressed
  • Emotional support such as keep company and cheering them up

It's not easy
In addition to the daily caring tasks young carers often live with the added pressure of school and sometimes lack of understanding from schoolmates. The physical and emotional strain is sometimes too much, many may skip school, suffer depression, lack of sleep and neglect their own health. Young carer’s own needs can go unrecognised because they try to keep their situation at home a secret.
