There are different types of respite care available for adults, depending on your needs as a carer, and the needs of the person you help to look after. These needs will be agreed in a carer’s assessment when you contact us – see the Assessments for carers leaflet on the right for more.
This page gives a brief overview of respite services for adults. For detailed information on all the different types of respite care, download the directory of services for carers in Leeds, Choices for carers, from this page, or ring 224 3991 for a hard copy.
Short breaks – home based respite scheme
A trained carer visits the home of the person you look after for a few hours, or goes out with the cared for person, if appropriate, to give you some time to yourself. Breaks can be for part of the day, an occasional whole day or on a one-off basis. In more demanding care situations it could be for a whole night.

Breaks in a family home
The Social Care Family Placement Scheme can organise breaks in one of their carers’ family homes. Family Placement carers are carefully selected and trained. You will have the chance to meet the carer before you decide if you want to use the scheme. This team can also provide breaks in a person’s own home.
Care can be provided during the day or evening, overnight or for longer periods. For further information, contact Family Placement Scheme on:247 8659. Or read more about the Family Placement Scheme.
Breaks in a care home or other facility
Depending on the care needs of the person you look after, they may need to stay at a purpose-built or specialist facility if you need a longer break.
This type of break needs to be arranged by a social worker. If you are not already in contact with one of our social workers, ring Adult Social Care on 0113 222 4401 to arrange an assessment or find out more about these types of breaks.
