Taking a break from caring

taking a break

It is important for your physical and emotional health to take a break from time to time and there are services that make this possible for you. There are various types and lengths of respite breaks available, depending on your needs and the needs and wishes of the person you care for, which may be agreed following a carers’ assessment.

  • Home based where a care worker spends time with the care receiver at their home and/or takes them out
  • Leeds Shared Lives where the cared for person goes to stay at a specially selected family home
  • Day services centres activity clubs, adult education for the cared for person, day hospitals (mental health),
  • Night sitting at cared for person home, while the carer sleeps
  • Overnight stays in a trained carers’ home, specialist hostels or group home
  • Short breaks regular or one-off periods of days or weeks where the cared for person stays at a trained carers’ home, specialist hostel or group home
  • Residential/nursing home placements often referred to as planned respite
  • Hospital based respite very limited
  • Hospice

Cost of respite placements away from home
Where Social Care has arranged a longer respite placement there is a small flat weekly charge to the cared for person, not the carer.
