What is a crisis?
We think of crisis as a recent change in a person’s ability to cope, often because of something stressful that has happened. Crisis can be seen as an opportunity for positive change.
How the crisis counselling service works
We offer a free, short-term (up to 16 weeks) counselling service. The aim of the service is to resolve the most pressing problems within a one to twelve week period. One of the most effective ways to do this is through face to face counselling.
We are open seven days-a-week, 365 days-a-year (Monday to Friday 10:00am-9:30pm; Saturday and Sunday 11:00am-7:00pm).
The service is for individuals experiencing a recent crisis, usually in the last few days or weeks. This will have resulted in a sudden and serious reduction in their ability to cope, and/or a significant deterioration in their mental health.
Referrals are taken over the phone, from any relevant source, e.g. the client themselves, a professional, a friend, etc. We often prefer self-referrals.
When the service is going to be offered to a client, the first appointment will normally take place within 72 hours of the initial referral, or sometimes sooner, for instance in cases where there is a significant level of risk.
All Crisis Centre Officers are qualified in counselling and/or experienced in mental health work. We come from a variety of professional backgrounds.
Using the crisis counselling service
We prefer you to phone us first, as we are not able to see people without an appointment.
What happens when I phone?
We ask you about your crisis; what has happened and how you have been affected. This helps us to think about how we can best help you.
How quickly will I be seen?
If we agree to see you, your first appointment will usually be within 72 hours of the first phone call. It is quite common for us to see someone the next day.
