When caring ends

end of caring

The caring role may have come to an end for a number of reasons such as:

  • The cared for person has recovered sufficiently to be effectively independent
  • You may have spent many years caring and have finally accepted that you can no longer manage
  • The cared for person may have moved to a residential or nursing care home permanently
  • You may be a young carer who is leaving home to go to college or start a job
  • You may be a parent who’s had to make arrangements for your disabled child to be more independent by moving them into sheltered accommodation
  • Your own health may be suffering and you require care yourself
  • Perhaps the time has come when you feel that your own future or that of your family must now take precedence over the person you care for
  • The person you’ve been caring for may have died

You are bound to feel a mixture of relief, worry and guilt but in time you will learn to accept that the decisions taken were appropriate, that there is no right or wrong, and life is full of compromise. If the person you cared for is now living elsewhere, you can still visit, be involved in their lives and show that you still care about them. Carer support organisation are there to help you move on and adjust to life without caring, including:

Carers Leeds Moving on Group for former carers whose caring role ended within last 12 months, tel 0113 246 8338.

Coping after a death
