Short breaks and respite for mental health carers

respite

Caring for someone with dementia is demanding and it’s important that carers take the time to also look after themselves and their own wellbeing, plus ensure they don’t become isolated by spending time with other friends and family. Regular alternative care may be arranged through friends, family or professional respite care. The home based short break services, described in the getting a break page of this website, are available for carers of a person with mental health problems.

If a residential placement away from home is required this will need to be arranged by Adult Social Care or the Leeds Partnership Foundation (Mental Health) Trust following a full assessment of the person who is going to the residential facility. You should discuss this with the health or social care worker responsible for the person you care for.

North Leeds Respite Service offer support to mental health carers in north-east and east Leeds following referral. Promotes the independence of the cared for person and provides respite for the carer, including regular home-based breaks.
