- Do you or someone living with you have difficulties living in your home, because of a health or a mobility problem?
- Are you disabled and require an adapted property?
- Are you getting older and require sheltered housing with the support of a warden?
If you have answered yes to the above questions you may be entitled to priority for re-housing on the Leeds Housing Register.
What can our service offer you?
Leeds City Council operates a medical priority scheme to help its customer’s access suitable housing. We can also offer you advice on alternatives to re-housing.
Who are we?
The Medical Housing Team provides a specialist service to its customers experiencing housing difficulties.
Read more frequently asked questions about re-housing.
The Medical Housing Team is responsible for:
- Assessments of all customers requesting re-housing on medical grounds.
- Assessments of all customers requiring sheltered Housing.
- The awarding of Medical Priority.
- The approval of heating for Council Tenants on health grounds
- Assisting with Planned Hospital Discharge patients whose current home is unsuitable because of their health.
- Providing advocacy and advice on a range of housing options.
- Supporting vulnerable customers who require assistance with the Choice Based Lettings Scheme.
- Supporting children requiring adapted properties
- Developing joint initiatives with our partners in Health and Social Services.
Who do we see?
Anyone from any tenure and any age group can apply to be considered for priority to move on health grounds. A doctors letter is not required. The fact that a person has a medical condition does not in itself give priority for re-housing.
We assess the unsuitability of the dwelling and not the severity of a health problem. If a customer’s home meets their medical needs they will not be awarded medical priority for re-housing.
Medical Priority will only be awarded if the
following criteria are met:
- The household contains a person with a chronic or degenerative illness, or has an impairment either physical, mental, learning or sensory.
- There is a link between the customers medical condition/impairment and the difficulties experienced in the property.
- Re-housing will significantly improve quality of life and the management of every day activities.
