Northern Art Prize Exhibition


​An exhibition of work by the shortlisted artists Margaret Harrison, Rosaline Nashashibi, Emily Speed, Joanne Tatham and Tom O'Sullivan.

With work ranging from film, sculpture, drawing and installation, this year's shortlisted artists were selected by a jury, chaired by Sarah Brown, Curator of Exhibitons at Leeds Art Gallery, comprising: Tomma Abts (Artist), Margot Heller (Director, South London Gallery), Jennifer Higgie (Co-Editor, Frieze) and James Lingwood (Co-Director, Artangel).

There will be performances of Emily Speed's 'Carapaces' every Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30pm for the duration of the exhibition.  Free entry.

The winning artist will be announced on 23rd May 2013 and will receive £16,500.  The remaining artists will each receive £1,500.

Exhibition opening hours: Mon-Tues and Thurs-Sat 10am-5pm; Wed 12pm-5pm; Sun 1pm-5pm (closed Bank Holidays).

A series of early evening events with this year's shortlisted artists in conversation with the curator's who nominated them.  Tickets are £5 (£3 concessions) on the door.  Reservations can be made at Leeds Art Gallery on 0113 247 8256.

Tues, 23rd April (6pm): Emily Speed and Sally Tallant (Artistic Director and CEO, Liverpool Biennial).

Tues, 30th April (6pm): Joanne Tatham and Tom O'Sullivan and Gavin Wade (Director, Eastside Projects) and Kirsteen Macdonald (Curator, Glasgow).

Tues, 7th May (6pm): Margaret Harrison and Kate Brindley (Director, MIMA).

Leeds Art Gallery is currently closed in order to carry out essential repairs to the original roof of the historic Victorian building. The Tiled Hall café and the Visit Leeds & Gallery shop will remain open throughout the period of the building work. During 2016, the Gallery will maintain an active profile through extensive loans from its art collections and seek to engage audiences through external programmes.

By bus: Leeds Art Gallery is a 15 minute walk from the city centre bus station. By train: The Art Gallery is a 10 minute walk from Leeds Railway Station. By car: The Art Gallery is well serviced by all routes travelling to the city-centre.


Metered street parking is located nearby on Cookridge Street. Secure car parking is available in Woodhouse Lane, The Light, Merrion Centre and Rose Bowl car parks, a 5-10 minute walk away.
