What are Street Works?
Street works are works carried out on a road by utility companies (usually the main services of gas, electricity, water and telecommunications).
Street works are governed by legislation which requires utilities to inform the Council of any works that they are carrying out within the Leeds boundary. The Council in turn is required to keep a register of the information supplied from utilities, it also includes road works carried out by Leeds City Council for highway maintenance and improvement.

What is the register used for?
The Street works register is used to support the Council’s role in co-ordinating works to minimise the impact of works on traffic. It is also used by the council to ensure that works are carried out safely and to required standards.
What is contained on the register?
The online register contains all of the information on works which is required under street works legislation. All activities are recorded at street level. Many of the fields contained in the register are likely to be of interest only to professionals in the field (e.g. reinstatement categories, NSG references).
The main fields likely to be of general interest are those describing when works are to start and end, who is responsible for the works, and the locations and description of works to be carried out.
The legislation that covers this area is the New Roads & Street Works Act 1991 and the Traffic Management Act 2004. Further detailed information on Street Works can be obtained from the Department for Transport web site
Any queries regarding the contents of register should be addressed to the utility concerned, or to Leeds City Council at highways@leeds.gov.uk
