At Household Waste Sorting Sites (HWSS), also called tips or recycling centres, you can recycle a wide range of materials.  In Leeds there are 11 sites and they are open every day.

Maps and links to the site pages are available below

Household waste site           Waste recycled in December 2009

Opening times: 9am - 5pm in summer (April to October, British Summer Time) and 9am - 4pm in winter (November to March Greenwich Mean Time).

Please note if you are using a van to get rid of household waste you can only dispose of your waste on a Wednesday and Saturday. This is to ensure that trade waste is not being disposed of illegally by businesses at household waste sorting sites.

We only accept waste from Leeds residents and you can only dispose of your own household waste.

What can I recycle, compost and dispose of at a HWSS?

You can recycle, compost or dispose of most things at a HWSS (for a list see the downloadable document recycling – a what and where guide),

  • sort out your recyclables/waste before you leave home;
  • recycle or compost as much as you can and use the general landfill skip as the last resort;
  • HWSS do not accept business waste.
  • To dispose of asbestos or other hazardous waste, there is a special procedure you must follow to protect the Health and Safety of our customers and staff. Please see our Dangerous and poisonous waste advice first.

Five of the household waste sites now provide a facility for you to donate goods that you no longer want but are too good to throw away.  These donations are then given to local reuse charities including St Judes furniture store, Emmaus, Leeds and Moortown furniture store and South Leeds Alternative Trading Enterprise (SLATE).  The facilities are at Meanwood Road, Holmewell Road, Milner Road, Pudsey Grangefield and Thorp Arch household waste sites.

Please remember the environmental contact centre is open Monday to Friday between 8am - 6pm. Please be aware that Monday morning is the busiest time at the contact centre 0113 2224406.

What to do if you need to dispose of trade waste?

It is illegal to dispose of trade waste at household waste sorting sites.

Businesses have a legal responsibility to safely contain and dispose of their waste. When trade waste is disposed of you must obtain a "Waste Transfer Note" to provide proof of how you have disposed of your waste.

Businesses can dispose of their waste at a private waste disposal site or at our waste transfer station. At the waste transfer station you will be asked to drive on to the weighbridge and will be charged according to the weight of your waste.

Due to redevelopment work taking place at East Leeds household waste sorting site, trade or commercial customers are not currently able to use this site for disposal of their waste or to use the public weigh bridge. Please go to the Notice to trade customers using East Leeds household waste sorting site link on the right hand side of this page for further details.

Leeds City Council's waste transfer station is

Kirkstall HWSS
Evanston Avenue
Leeds
LS4 2HR
0113 214 3639

The weighbridge is open from 8.30am to 3.30pm.

As of April 2009 waste is currently charged at £104.66 per tonne, minimum charge £52.33.  Hazardous waste such as freezers, fridges, televisions and fluorescent tubes will be charged separately.  For information on charges please contact the site.

Alternatively businesses can arrange for a waste contractor to collect and dispose of their waste. If you are found disposing of your waste illegally you will be prosecuted. The maximum penalty is a fine of £50,000 or 12 months imprisonment.
