What is the cleaner, greener, Leeds campaign?
The cleaner, greener, Leeds campaign is a people-led campaign to improve the cleanliness of Leeds.
Cleaner, greener, Leeds will:
-
Work with communities and schools to deliver a community education scheme
-
Deliver environmental improvements
-
Improve appearance of main roads and streets
-
Enhance and improve bin yards and open spaces across Leeds
-
Work with schools to improve awareness of environmental issues
-
Work with community groups to clean up and enhance local areas
-
Encourage businesses to keep their premises clean
Cleaner, greener, Leeds is about enabling community groups and schools to take part in cleaning up, looking after and improving their local environment to create a sense of identity and pride.
What is Leeds City Council doing?
Environmental Pride teams have been set up in each of the five wedges within the city. The teams undertake tasks such as graffiti removal, minor construction works, horticultural works and intensive cleaning.
To improve awareness of environmental issues the council are delivering an education programme as part of the sustainable schools framework, to both primary and secondary schools across Leeds, in partnership with Education Leeds, Groundwork Leeds and BTCV.
Who is involved in the campaign?
Everyone has a part to play: residents, businesses, council departments, voluntary organisations and community groups.
Groundwork Leeds will work with communities and schools to deliver environmental improvement projects and will encourage the community groups and schools to submit their projects into the ‘Community and City pride awards ’ run by Leeds City Council.
How can I get involved?
Most people can think of an area in their community that could do with a facelift. This might be a green space that has been used to dump rubbish, a school play area that needs brightening up or a local pathway which has become overgrown. This local knowledge is vital and you have it.
If communities take ownership for an area it is much more likely to stay green, clean and well maintained.
There are success stories all over the city and yours could become another. Get involved and let us know what needs doing in your local area and we will support you to make it better.
Take part in Cleaner Greener Leeds and register your community, youth or faith group for the Community and City Pride Awards. This is your chance to shout about what you have done and get recognition for all your hard work. Have a look at the Community and City Pride section for more information on how to apply and how we can help with your submission.
You can also make your community cleaner and greener by
You can report online graffiti, fly posting, dumped rubbish or spillages and abandoned vehicles or shopping trolleys.
