This free competition is open to all residents of Leeds, and aims to promote a sense of pride in their gardens. The competition is split into twenty ward-based areas across the city so there are twenty local competitions. There are three categories to choose from: -

  • Large garden, must be a complete garden, including back and front where applicable (should be greater than 500sq. yards or 418sq metres in total)
  • Small garden, must be a complete garden, including back and front where applicable (should be no more than 500sq yards or 418sq metres in total)
  • Floral plant containers, (window boxes, hanging baskets and planters etc)

Judging takes place in July.

Entries will be judged on some or all of these

  • Health, vigour and suitability of plants used.
  • suitability of the garden’s design to its location and size.
  • Maintenance of paths, structures, lawns, patios, walls and fences.
  • Standard of cultivation and freedom from perennial weeds.
  • Harmonious blending of colours shapes and textures.
  • Potential for long–term display
  • Initial impact of colour and textures
  • Presentation, balance and symmetry of display/s.

Prizes are awarded for first, second and third place in each of the three categories in each ward.

Businesses in Bloom competition
Leeds in Bloom encourages businesses, large or small to complement the our display by decorating their own premises with floral displays.

We hold a free competition is held every spring and summer. There are categories for  all types of businesses. These are

  • Best public house
  • Best restaurant, café or licensed premises (other than a pub)
  • Best hotel
  • Best small offices or business premises
  • Best large offices or business premises
  • Best small retail premises
  • Best large retail premises
  • Best large business including retail parks
  • Best school or youth group garden
  • Best community or club garden

The judges award marks based on the following constituents: -

  • Floral display, originality, variety and amount of colour
  • Use of plant containers, window boxes and hanging baskets
  • maintenance and condition of plants and planting including efforts to overcome environmental difficulties
  • Standard of surrounds and cleanliness of establishment, neatness, tidiness and absence of litter
  • Overall impression and impact
