Wildlife surveys help us to build up a picture of what wildlife we have and where. We can use them to monitor habitats and wild populations of plants and animals in Leeds, and to make sure that the way we look after our sites is good for wildlife.
The rangers, working with species conservation officer and countryside officer, carry out regular surveys of wildflowers, bats, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater crayfish and water voles, and of the habitats they are found in. All information we gather is fed into the local records centre, West Yorkshire Ecology, and to National Databases.
If you would like to help out on our surveys you can download our survey programme from this page. Training is provided, but some basic knowledge is very helpful. Most of these surveys take place in the spring and summer when wildlife is more active, but we do undertake some surveys in autumn and winter too.
If you have some wildlife knowledge and are interested in getting involved, please contact us on countrysiderangers@leeds.gov.uk or 0113 237 5317. For information on how you could get involved in other environmental surveys please see the links to the right of this page.
