Summary Information on the Indices of Deprivation 2010
The Indices of Deprivation (IoD) is produced by central Government to provide details of deprivation within specific areas across the country. These areas are technically known as lower super output areas (LSOAs).
In total England is made up of 32,482 LSOAs, with 476 of these making up Leeds. The Indices creates a score and a rank for each LSOA in England where a rank of "1" indicates the most deprived in the country and a rank of "32,482" the least deprived. Leeds' most deprived SOA is ranked 114 on the index of multiple deprivation.
The indices of deprivation is the collective name for a group of indices which all measure different aspects of deprivation. These are:
- index of multiple deprivation
- income deprivation
- employment deprivation
- health deprivation and disability
- education, skills and training deprivation
- barriers to housing and services
- living environment
- crime and disorder
- income deprivation affecting children
- income deprivation affecting older people
The IoD is an important tool for identifying areas of greatest need and has been used repeatedly by Government in the allocation of discretionary funding to the most deprived areas.
The Indices of Deprivation 2010 replaces the Indices of Deprivation 2007 as the official measure of deprivation in England.
