Our recycling and waste officers can provide information and advice to ensure that household chemicals are disposed of safely.
It is important that dangerous and poisonous waste is disposed of properly, to prevent any danger to people’s health or environmental damage.
In order to reduce the amount of hazardous waste you produce consider buying only the amount of hazardous chemicals you need for a task and make sure that you use them all up. There are lots of less toxic alternatives out there that can be used for simple tasks for example consider organic growing methods to reduce the amount of pesticides that you use.
The most common type of hazardous household waste produced is paint. If you have lots of paint to get rid of then you can give it to a local community group 'Seagulls' who distribute paint that is in good condition to community groups who can use it or sell it to the public at their paint store. Donate your paint to Seagulls Reuse Ltd, Units 3 & 4, Aire Place Mills, Kirkstall Road, Leeds, LS3 1JL or you can phone 0113 246 7510.
Seagulls are not able to collect paint from households. Paint must be taken to either one of the following household waste sorting sites Meanwood Road, Holmewell Road, Milners Road, Pudsey Grangefield, Thorp Arch, or be taken direct to Seagulls on Kirkstall Road.

Emergency removal of dangerous waste
Chemical leakages, fires and incidents involving radioactive materials may require action by the emergency services, the Council and other agencies. These incidents may result in a hazard to public health and/or pollution to the environment.
The source of a chemical or environmental hazard may be:
A fixed industrial site (e.g. a large chemical works or a nuclear power station)
A vehicle or container in transit
An abandoned material on public or private land.
You can find out what type of incidents could occur from the release of hazardous materials in the ‘Hazardous Material Scenarios’ document available from this page.
For information on incidents involving the deliberate release of chemicals or biological agents please go to the ‘Terrorism’ page.
The ‘Hazardous Materials Advice’ document explains what to do to protect yourself and your family in incidents involving hazardous substances.
