Births
If you’ve just had a baby there are a number of services and government departments that need to know about the birth. It’s important they know as soon as possible as it may affect your entitlements, such as Child Benefit, Working Tax Credits or Child Tax Credits.
By using the Tell Us Once service we can notify other areas of the council as well as government departments for you. You won’t need to send them a copy of the birth certificate in the post.
Tell Us Once is a free service which is provided immediately following the registration by a member of Customer Services staff. The whole registration and notification process will take 30 to 45 minutes.
The service is optional and we will ask you if you would like to use this service when you make your appointment.
You can use the Tell Us Once service to tell the following organisations about the birth:
- Department for Work and Pensions
- Jobcentre Plus
- Housing Benefit Office
- Council Tax Benefit Office
- Library Services
- Children’s Services (Family Information Services)
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)
- Child Benefit
- Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit
To make sure the right information is given to any organisations we contact for you and so that you get the most out of the service it will help if you can bring the following information to your appointment:
- Birth Certificate (issued by the Registrar when you register the birth)
- The National Insurance number/s and date of birth, address and telephone number for any parent shown on the birth certificate
- Details of any benefits that the person/s named on the birth certificate are receiving/have applied for
- The partner of the person named on the birth certificate, (if they live in the same household) including their National Insurance number and/or date of birth and information about any benefits they may be receiving.
You will need to get permission from these people to tell us about them before you use the service. To make an appointment (or for any queries), please telephone 0113 2224408.
