Parenting orders

Parenting orders can be given to the parents or carers of young people who offend, truant or who have received a child safety, anti-social behaviour or sex offender order. Parenting orders last for three months, but can be extended to 12 months. This doesn’t result in the parent or carer getting a criminal record.

A parent or carer who receives a parenting order must go to counselling and guidance sessions. They may also have to make sure their child doesn’t visit a particular place unsupervised or make sure their child is at home at particular times. If a parent or carer doesn’t meet these conditions this is a criminal offence and they can be prosecuted.

We also provide support for parents on a voluntary basis.
