Households in the Rothwell area of the city are taking part in a recycling collection trial. The trial aims to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill by providing

  • A weekly collection of food waste
  • Fortnightly green bin/bag collections
  • Fortnightly collection of garden waste
  • Fortnightly black bin/bag collections

The new trial started in February 2010 and was due to last six months, however due to its success and the positive feedback received from residents the trial will continue until further notice.

From the start of April 2010 to the end of March this year we collected 1007 tonnes of food waste - that's the same weight as more then 69 double decker buses!

Compostable liners

Residents were provided with a supply of compostable cornstarch liners at the start of the trial, however you do not need to use liners in your caddy if you are happy doing without.

If you still want to use a liner you can use old newspapers or other waste paper to line your caddy. Alternatively, any brand of compostable liner that clearly displays the European Bio plastics logo can be used and these can be purchased from larger supermarkets and hardware stores.

Just make sure you don't use any other type of bag or liner, eg made from plastic.

Alternatively, you can request more liners by emailing refusecollection@leeds.gov.uk, or by telephoning us on 0113 222 4406.
