TheĀ Leeds Local Indexes, compiled and maintained by Leeds Library and Information Services, have been put together to assist research in local historical information.

They consist of indexes to Census information such as the Leeds Street index and the Census Name index and indexes to non-parochial and Quaker records. In addition to this newspapers, journals and books have been indexed for both Leeds and Yorkshire and these references can be found in the Leeds Newscuttings Index and the Yorkshire Newscuttings index.

This database will provide references for research, not the actual articles. However by digitising the indexes we are making them more accessible and allowing more research to be done remotely.

All the material referred to can be found in Leeds Local Studies Library. Each record found on the database gives a description of the item, such as a newspaper article, and the reference to where it can be found in the Local Studies Library.

What are the Local Indexes?

Quaker Registers
An index of registers of births, marriages and burials for Quaker Meetings in Yorkshire. Only those registers held by the Public Record Office are included. Each entry gives details of the type of register (whether for births, marriages, burials) and the date available for a particular monthly meeting.

Non Parochial Registers
An index of registers of births, marriages and burials of non-parochial (non-conformist) churches and chapels in Yorkshire. Only those registers held by the Public Record Office are included.
