Respite care is a way of giving parents and carers a break from caring and allows time for themselves or with other children in the family. Your child in turn will benefits from experiencing new social and learning activities and making new friends. Breaks vary from a couple of hours, overnight, weekend, occasional longer stays or holiday breaks and are arranged through your child’s health and social care assessment.

Family Placement offer a number of respite services for children with physical disability, severe learning disability or sensory impairment where they stay in a carer’s home. To find out more visit the Family Placement page, tel 0113 247 8655

  • Children’s Sitting Service and the Children’s Home Based Scheme arrange for sitters to look after children at home or accompany the family on outings (to provide extra help and support), or provide overnight care, tel 0113 247 8589
  • The Children’s Home Based Scheme offer longer periods of sitting and is accessible
  • Day Care for young children with disabilities for parents of disabled babies that require a lot of extra care from a specially trained carer.

Leeds Weekend Care Association provide a number of short breaks schemes. Tel 0113 2165133, office base is Suite 4, Gledhow Mount Mansion, 32, Roxholme Grove, Leeds LS7 4JJ,

  • Weekenders Club is a play club for children with moderate of severe learning or physical disabilities or ill-health on Saturdays and Sundays at two locations in Leeds. Children attend for one day every four weeks
  • Homebased short breaks in South Leeds area, where a care workers provides usually one break per week for parents of children with moderate to severe learning or physical disabilities or ill-health
  • Half term play schemes

Rainbow Project, Leeds Jewish Welfare Board offer respite care to Jewish children and their families (Home Based/Community Based Care) tel 0113 268 4211, 311 Stonegate Road, Moortown, LS17 6AZ

Broom Court offer short-term care to children with moderate or severe learning and/or physical disabilities on a planned basis. Placements are arranged through the family social worker.

Leeds Children’s Continuing Care Team (LCCCT) provide nursing respite to children with complex health needs and their families in the home environment, access is through a health assessment, tel 0113 2772 811
