Young carers

The 2001 census told us that in Leeds, there were 1,068 carers under the age of 16, some of them caring for over 50 hours a week. Young carers are children or a young person aged 18 or under who are the main carers of a parent, sibling or grand-parent who may have:

  • a disability
  • a serious illness
  • a mental health problem
  • or an alcohol, drug or substance problem

Young carers can face serious caring responsibilities and often do not know where to go for help or even that they need it. In Leeds we have services specifically to support young carers and to give advice to professionals who are aware of a young carer. To find out more please follow the links below.
