The 2001 census told us that in Leeds, there were 1,068 carers under the age of 16, some of them caring for over 50 hours a week. Young carers are children or a young person aged 18 or under who are the main carers of a parent, sibling or grand-parent who may have:
- a disability
- a serious illness
- a mental health problem
- or an alcohol, drug or substance problem
Young carers can face serious caring responsibilities and often do not know where to go for help or even that they need it.
