Dangerous and poisonous waste must be disposed of properly, to prevent any danger to people’s health or environmental damage.

Paint
The most common type of hazardous household waste is paint. If you have lots of paint to get rid of then you can give it to a local community group 'Seagulls' who distribute usable paint to community groups who can use it or sell it to the public at their store. Donate your paint at:

Batteries
Batteries should be recycled at Household waste sorting sites or at some council offices (such as libraries, One Stop Centres and neighbourhood housing offices). See the download for a full list.

Emergency removal of dangerous waste
Chemical leakages, fires and incidents involving radioactive materials may require action by the emergency services, ourselves and other agencies. These incidents may result in a hazard to public health and/or pollution to the environment.

The source of a chemical or environmental hazard may be:

  • a fixed industrial site (e.g. a large chemical works or a nuclear power station)
  • a vehicle or container in transit
  • an abandoned material on public or private land.

You can download more information from the hazardous materials leaflet and the hazardous materials advice available as a pdfs from the right hand side of this page.

You can also find more information on incidents involving the deliberate release of chemicals or biological agents
