Corrections to births, deaths and marriages register

The Register Office Leeds Town Hall
The Register Office Leeds Town Hall

If an error is discovered in an entry in a birth, death or marriage entry a correction must be made only in accordance with the legal procedures.

If you find a mistake in a certificate you should contact the Register Office who hold the birth death or marriage entry. The Registrar will advise you how to correct the entry.

The Registrar may ask you to produce certain documents to confirm the correct information -these could be evidence of correct addresses, passport details, driving licences etc. The Registrar may also ask you to write a letter explaining why the error occurred.

In some cases the Registrar can correct the errors in the Register in the presence of the Superintendent Registrar but sometimes the information has to be sent to the Registrar General for his authority for the error to be corrected.

Should you need any further advice on this matter or you want to ask about changing a name by Deed Poll or Statutory Declaration please contact the Leeds Register Office or a solicitor.
