Leeds is an exciting modern city providing a good standard of life and excellent services. We have been talked about as the Number One Housing City. We are committed to working with partners in the public and private sectors so we can deliver high quality affordable housing that meets the aspirations and needs of our growing population. Our aim is to maximise the numbers of affordable homes built across the city
We have recognised the difficulties many of our citizens have faced in trying to find a home. Changes in the housing market, both nationally and regionally, have had a major effect on the city's ability to provide new homes and meet our housing targets. We responded by setting up the Affordable Housing Strategic Partnership Board in 2007 so that we could help to see the construction of more new affordable housing in Leeds.
We have worked with housing associations to increase the number of new affordable homes in the city. This approach has helped us to receive £25 million in grants to develop affordable housing. Work is underway across the city that will bring various types of new homes for social rent and low cost home ownership which will be available during 2010/11.
We have used planning laws to make sure a proportion of homes on new private sector housing developments are affordable social housing for rent or intermediate homes for people to buy,
