A to Z of Services

Council tax calculations

compute

The amount of the Council Tax depends on how much money the Council needs in order to pay for the services which it will provide in the financial year (1st April to 31st March).

Each year, the Council works out a yearly amount payable for a Band D property. The amounts payable for the other Bands are proportions of the Band D amount, as follows:

Band
A - 6/9
B - 7/9
C - 8/9
E - 11/9
F - 13/9
G - 15/9
H - 18/9

People who live in areas which have Parish Councils often have a small amount extra to pay for services provided by their Parish Council; this is called a Parish Precept and the money collected by the City Council is paid over to the Parish Council.

Once the full amount for the year has been set, the amount that each household has to pay is worked out based on the number of people who live in the property.
