Disability services

If you are a disabled person and live in Leeds there are many services available to help you get out and about and keep your independence.

Before we can offer you services or support you should contact us on 0113 222 4401 to arrange an assessment. We will work with you to decide what services would be best for you. Read more about assessments here.

Summary of services and support 

Equipment, adaptations and safety alarms in your home 
Equipment (e.g. grab rails, lever taps), adaptations, safety alarms and sensors can help you live more independently and safely at home.

Transport and mobility services
Many day services offer help with transport to activities and community facilities. Various other services exist to support you in getting where you want to go...

  • Wheelchairs and scooters are available for short and long-term use.

  • Shopmobility lends scooters and wheelchairs free of charge to people who need support while at the shops.

  • The Motability scheme helps disabled people find safe, reliable and affordable cars.

  • Blue parking badges are available for anyone with severe walking difficulties, or blind people, allowing you to park closer to your destination.

  • Access Bus is a dial-a-ride, door-to-door bus service for people who have difficulty using conventional public transport.

  • Disabled person’s bus passes allow disabled people to travel free on off-peak local buses throughout England.

  • DisabledGo Access Guides are detailed access guides to shops, stations, restaurants and other services in Leeds provided by DisabledGo in partnership with Leeds City Council.

Day services 
These provide a place to meet up with others for a range of activities, lunch and – at some – assistance with personal care.

Resource centres
These provide a place to socialise, learn new skills/hobbies and get advice and support.

Leeds Centre for Integrated Living
Services include personal assistance, direct payments (see more on direct payments below), housing and independent living support, advocacy training and support for groups. 

Services for blind, dual sensory loss and partially sighted adults
Leeds Vision Consortium (Leeds Action for Blind People and the Wilberforce Trust) delivers a range of services for blind, dual sensory loss and partially sighted adults living in Leeds.

Services for people with a hearing impairment
Various support services are available including hearing  equipment, interpreting, translation and care at home.

Services for people with learning disabilities 
Various support services are available including small group living schemes, day services and sheltered employment.

Disabled children – information for families and carers
The Family Hub Leeds is a service helping signpost and inform families and carers of any child or young person in Leeds.

Direct payments 
You can access payments to cover your own social care services instead of receiving them directly from the council.

Residential care 
Accommodation services are available for people who are unable to live independently and safely in their own homes.

Respite care
We provide support to carers who help look after a relative or friend at home.

Leisure, sport and learning
We can help you find sports or leisure activities or opportunities to develop your education and skills.
