Council tax general information

Civic Hall

Your council tax helps to pay for many of our city's vital services. We want to make our services the best we possibly can and provide you with excellent value for money. Council tax replaced the community charge (also known as the 'poll tax') and came into effect in 1993.

Leeds City Council has a responsibility to collect council tax and business rates from 324893 homes and 25323 business premises in the Leeds area. The totals we collect are huge - in the 2006/07 financial year this was about £221 million in council tax and £282 million in business rates.

What can you expect from us?

Every year the council sets performance targets for work done on council tax and business rates. You can reasonably expect that we will;

  • reply to letters in 10 working days;
  • answer the telephone within 20 seconds and will try to make any amendments you ask for straight away;
  • make changes you request to your account within 10 working days.

We are committed to improving the quality of service delivery and have a customer services officer who continuously monitors the services we provide. You can contact Council Tax on either 0845 126 0113 or 0113 398 4730. Our Minicom number is 0845 127 1113 or 0113 245 1543.  Click the link for more information on how to contact us.

If you want to make any comments about our services or if you are unhappy with our services, please let us know. We are here to help and most problems can be sorted out on the spot.

If you are unhappy with another council department you should contact them direct - you can find contact details for over 500 council services in the A-Z in the top right corner of this page.
