Go bananas for Fairtrade Fortnight 2009

Hundreds of thousands of people in Great Britain and Ireland went bananas by eating one Fairtrade banana each as part of a world record attempt.

As one of the highlights of Fairtrade Fortnight in 2009, people in Leeds were given the opportunity to contribute to the world record breaking attempt.  The attempt was for the greatest number of people to eat a Fairtrade banana in a 24-hour period at the ‘Going bananas’ event on Briggate on 6 March.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Frank Robinson, launched the event at 12 noon and the crowds were entertained by Samba Vista from Allerton High School, the Steel Sparrows (steel pan group) and 'The Bananas' (street theatre group who dress as Fairtrade bananas).

Bananas were kindly donated by ASDA Stores Ltd and Marks and Spencer. The event was zero waste and carbon neutral.

All sorts of exciting events took place around Leeds between 23 February and 8 March 2009 to highlight Fairtrade Fortnight.
